Individual therapy can look like many different things, depending on what your needs are and what your goals are for treatment. Sometimes individual therapy looks like you sharing your deepest thoughts, worries, and dreams. Other times it may involve role playing, creating art together, or using the assistance of Dr. McFarland’s registered therapy dog. How you want your sessions to look is up to you and your goals for treatment.
Dr. McFarland provides an individualized treatment approach, which means you have the control to decide what you want your sessions to include. She is well educated in a variety of treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), gestalt, acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) internal family systems (IFS), and existential therapy. This allows her to have the flexibility to use the approach that well be most suited for you. Research has suggested that as few as 6 sessions can significantly increase a person’s self-esteem, confidence, coping skills, and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. I offer short term treatment, as long as longer term treatment. We will work together to see what will be the most effective in getting you to live the life you want!

Individual Therapy for Children and Adolescents
Dr. McFarland works with children (ages 4 and older) and adolescents in her office in Golden and Littleton, CO. She can meet with your child from twice a week to once a month, depending on your child’s needs. Sessions typically last approximately 50 minutes. Children and adolescents may need therapy to help them learn coping skills, how to regulate their emotions, or to stay focused and follow directions. Sometimes children or teens have been exposed to trauma (abuse, violence, bullying) or changes in the family. Play therapy and behavior modification can be used to help children and adolescents process these scary events. Therapy can help them to be more successful at school, have improved relationships with peers, and better relationships with their parents. Many times, only a few sessions are needed to help children learn these skills. Some children may struggle with depression/anxiety which can look different in children and adolescents. You may notice your child being more irritable, changes in sleeping (either too much or not enough), changes in appetite (eating more or less than normal), angry, isolates, or appears sad. If your child or teenager talks about hurting him/herself you need to have them immediately assessed by a mental health professional. You can take your child to any emergency room for a safety assessment. In addition, Dr. McFarland works with children and adolescents who engage in Trichotillomania (hair pulling) or skin picking.
