Dr. Tonya McFarland

Who is Dr. McFarland?

I am a compassionate, dedicated psychologist who wants to help you achieve your fullest potential.  I work with individuals and families who are going through difficult times and want to make their lives better.  Therapy is most effective when you can find a therapist who you feel you can build a safe relationship with and trust.  I have worked in the mental health field for almost 20 years.  I am more direct and straight forward than some therapists.  I can understand and relate to the emotions under the thoughts and behaviors.  I can help you recognize how you have been coping with difficult experiences, how you relate to others, why you do the things you do, and help you change those unhealthy patterns that may leave you feeling lonely, sad, scared, and frustrated.  Let’s meet and see if I am a good fit for you.  If I’m not, that’s okay!  I can help you find someone who you feel more comfortable working with.

I obtained my doctorate in 2005 and became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 2007.  I am also a certified eating disorder specialist. I have worked with individuals struggling with eating disorders, depression, self-harming behaviors, anxiety, and trauma for more than 10 years. I have worked with eating disorders in residential treatment at Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, FL, in intensive outpatient program at La Luna Center in Boulder, CO, and in an outpatient program at Kaiser Permanente. In addition, I was one of the first psychologist’s in Colorado to provide integrative care in pediatric clinics and presented on the benefits of integrative care at the behavioral health conference in Breckenridge, CO. I completed my doctoral paper on the treatment of eating disorders using dialectical behavioral therapy and have been a dissertation chair for a student writing her dissertation on the impact an eating disorder has on a women’s sexual desire. I have also been an adjunct professor at the University of Denver teaching ethics to graduate level students. Currently I am the clinical supervisor at the Eating Disorder Foundation in Denver, CO and membership chair for the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP).

I started my private practice shortly after moving to Colorado in 2006. My practices are located in Golden and Littleton, CO and I work with children, adolescents, and adults by seeing individuals and families.  I am well versed in multiple different therapeutic orientations including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), internal family systems (IFS), existential, acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) and gestalt. I am able to be flexible in order to meet the needs of my clients.
